After the important win against the Unicorns of Love, we managed to talk to Misfits' Toplaner Alphari about Misfits' standing within EU LCS, the current state of Toplane and the upcoming match against H2K.
Congratulations for the win! How do you feel right now?
Thanks, I feel pretty good right now, even though the games weren’t the cleanest. Winning against a Top 4 team in Europe makes me pretty happy.
As it stands right now, you guys are the second best team in Europe. How does that make you feel?
I don’t really care about the tables and standings. I care about playing and winning against the teams that are good. Unicorns of Love, H2K and G2, those are the good teams in Europe. So even though you say we’re second right now, we haven’t played H2K yet and we have to play against G2 again, who beat us before. It’s nice to see us doing well, but we’re not the best yet. We need to keep on improving.
A lot of people expected Misfits to do well, but few actually thought you guys would be able to be genuine first place contenders. Were you able to prove these people wrong?
I think we proved these people wrong so far. Even when we lost against G2, we put up a good show, and we just beat UoL who’ve been top of their group since basically the start now.
Did you guys yourselves expect to be first place contenders?
Everyone wants to be the best, but I wasn’t quite sure on how we were going to perform. I knew that by the time the Summer Split starts we’d be a definite contender for first. I expected us to start a bit slower in the Spring Split, us placing in somewhere in the Top 4-5, partly due to the language barriers between KaKAO, Ignar and the rest of us. All of us have massively improved since though and our general rate of improvement is really high as well. If you compare our performances from our first game against Giants Gaming to now, you can see the differences clearly.
How happy are you with the team environment right now?
The team environment is really good right now, obviously winning a lot of games helps with that. Everyone’s really happy right now and eager to improve. None of us are content with where we are either, we still want to beat H2K and we definitely want to beat G2, they’re going to be our biggest challenge yet.
A lot of people have praised your performance, especially given that you’re a Rookie still. How happy are you with your own performance?
I think I’ve been playing pretty well so far, especially when compared to other Toplaners in Europe. This is partly due to some Toplaners like Wunder underperforming as well though. I still make mistakes, even though they don’t happen during laning phase. During mid game or late game I tend to make mistakes whilst engaging, that’s definitely an area of improvement for me.
In this series against UoL, you almost got as many kills as in the five weeks beforehand. How does that make you feel?
(laughs) Well I mean this is the stuff that happens when you play against Unicorns, right? They’re always looking for fights and we were playing pretty proactively as well. There were a lot of kills and deaths on both sides, so even though this kind of statistic is surprising, it’s just what happens when you play against the Unicorns.
Your Rumble really popped off, in some teamfights you even managed to do more damage than the entire Unicorns of Love team! What do you think of the state of Rumble right now, when looking back on the SKT vs KT game also?
I think Rumble is the strongest Toplaner at the moment. With Maokai and Jayce being nerfed, there aren’t that many safe blind pick Toplaners anymore. Rumble might be the best blind pick toplaner right now. He doesn’t really have any bad matchups, he scales really well, and as you’ve seen, he can completely destroy immobile AD Carries, who are pretty meta at the moment.
What do you think of Toplane right now not being the pillow-fight it once was?
Riot has been gradually nerfing tank champions, like Maokai and Poppy and by nerfing Courage of the Colossus as well. Due to this, people are experimenting more with other picks, which is good to see. Renekton for example didn’t really get changed, people have just started practicing him more now that other tanks have been falling out of the meta.
You have a really important match against H2K coming up, are you excited for that match?
I’m definitely looking forward to that series. At the start of the split I was regarding Jankos and Odoamne as the best Top+Jungle duo in Europe, I have a lot respect for both of them. Jankos in particular has been playing really well. I think it will be really fun to play against them, especially with KaKAO on our side. After our wins against the Unicorns, I’d say we’re slightly favoured against them.
Thank you very much for your time!
