Perkz and his team have shown a strong start to the EU LCS so far: With decisive wins against the likes of Fnatic and Misfits, they’re in first place in Group A, unbeaten as of now. We’ve talked to the Midlaner right after his game against Giants, asking him about EU Midlaners, cheese picks and the strength of other EU teams competing for first place.
Hi Perkz, thanks for taking your time to talk to us. First of all, let’s talk about the match against Giants! Gaming: The first game was a stomp, whereas the second game was actually pretty close at times. What do you think was different about the second game in comparison to the first?
In the first game we just played really controlled, we didn’t make any mistakes early game. In the second game I died for clearing a ward, so the game just kinda snowballed from there because they had the pressure. We got the pressure back after a couple of minutes, but it was pretty weird to play against Riven. We knew what to do in theory, but Flaxxish was playing pretty safe and he was constantly lane-swapping with Taliyah. So they were playing pretty well and so the game was decided by the teamfights, which were a bit messier due to the Riven pick. The game shouldn’t have been so close, but the Riven pick just threw us off a bit.
In general terms, G2 is a much stronger team than Giants, but in this game they pulled out the Riven pick and really made it work. Do you think that lower-tier teams should try these odd picks/tactics in order to succeed against really good teams?
If you want to win against a stronger opponent, you should try to cheese them. A lot of teams will try to do that against us specifically, pull out these niche picks to see if it works, maybe even carry the game with it. But the problem with that tactic is that next time we play against them, we either know how it works or we’ll just ban it. So it can work, but it’ll work one time only.
G2 is 4-0, unbeaten within your group, showing a very strong performance across the board, but there have been teams like Misfits or Fnatic challenging G2 for first place. For you as a Midlaner specifically, there have been some close matchups against the likes of Caps or PowerOfEvil, what do you think of these players right now?
Against Caps it was my first game on stage in the first year, so I was really nervous playing against him and played really bad. He played really good, but I played really bad too and misplayed quite a bit as well. I still think Caps is a really good player. I always praise him but he has obvious flaws too: He’s impatient, he’s too cocky and he’s got a lot to learn. But by the Summer Split, he’ll be a really good player.
As for PowerOfEvil, he’s really impressed me with his performance. I think he’s not nearly as good as Caps in lane, but he works really well with his team. He's gotten a lot better in comparison to last split, so I wonder if he will keep growing further, if he keeps learning meta champs he can be a really good player! Before this split he was only known for one or two champions, but now he’s been playing a lot more champions recently, so he should get a lot better in the future.
What do you think of the Unicorns of Love’s Midlaner Exileh? A lot of people and players have been praising him recently.
I think a lot of his praise comes from his performance during the Summer Split Playoffs performance and IEM. The three champions he’s really good at were in the Meta at the time, so he was able to single-handedly carry games at times. But in terms of general EU LCS performance, I think his games have been kind of on-and-off? He’s playing either really good or really bad, so he’s inconsistent even when his team is winning every game. I think Exileh is a player with good mechanics but he needs to work on his consistency.
We have five really talented Midlaners in the EU LCS right now, with the likes of Caps, Exileh, PowerOfEvil, Febiven and you of course. How do you think these Midlaners rank against each other?
I dislike ranking myself, I prefer to let other pro players rank me. I think all these players that you mentioned are really close right now, it just depends who can play more champions and perform more consistently. The most consistent performance came from PowerOfEvil, myself and Febiven as of now, we’ll have to see how Caps and Exileh will perform in the future. So I guess the three of us are Top 3 right now.
I don’t even think there’s a „best“ Midlaner in the EU LCS right now. Within landing phase, Caps was the strongest player I had to face so far, the rest comes down to champion pools and knowing your matchups. Exileh for example is really strong on Ryze, but you can’t judge his performance on his Ryze games only.
In general, all of the 10 EU Midlaners are really close right now though.
Could you elaborate on that?
Even though I mentioned the "top performers" right now I think every EU midlaner has his obvious strengths and weaknesses. It’s all about who improves the most during the split and becomes the best for playoffs. As of now, all of the 10 midlaners are fairly close in skill, with some being better in terms of individual skill and some playing better with their team.
What do you think of Zed coming back into the EU LCS, back into pro play again. Are you excited about that?
I think Zed is a niche pick right now, so you have to be both really comfortable and good on Zed in order to play him well. For example, Caps had a good performance on him early game but wasn’t able to translate that into the later stages into the game, which might be due to miscommunication though. It’s a really hard champion to pull out, but if you have the right team composition it’s still a good pick. Nukeduck had a really unlucky game on him though. I’m not too sure whether you’ll see a Zed pick from me, but if the right moment arises then I’ll play Zed for sure!
G2 is looking really strong once again, where exactly do you rate your team in comparison to the other teams? Do you think that G2 is the undisputed number 1, or do you think that there are other teams contesting for first?
Even though Fnatic looked really weak against Misfits, Misfits are just really good right now and Fnatic shouldn’t be underestimated too. H2K and Unicorns have looked really good as well, I think Unicorns might be the best team in Europe right now.
I also say this because I don’t want to create a bad mentality for our team. I don’t like to think of ourselves as the best team because you can get complacent: Last split I got complacent because I thought we were better than any other team and we were just going to crush everyone. So now I take every game serious and look at every series with a step-by-step approach. Every team is equal until you beat them, only when you beat them you can say that you’re the better team.
You must be really excited for the next two weeks then, facing UOL and H2K?
Yeah, I really want to see how we perform against these two teams.
Any players you’re really excited to play against?
It’s always fun to play against Febiven on stage, because we’re friends and talk about Mid a lot. It’s also fun to play against Nukeduck since I’m friends with him as well. I’m definitely looking for forward to play Vitality and H2K. I’m going to win against both of them.
Anything you’d like to say your fans?
I'd like to thank to all of the people that have supported me or G2 since beginning of my carer, even after such a miserable world performance from myself and the whole team I received many supportive messages and love. I've always worked hard and this failure only makes me work even harder, I promise to try my best as long as I'm professional player and will try to not disappoint you or myself in the future!
Thank you very much for the interview!
