After an important win against the Unicorns of Love, we talked to Misfits’ Midlaner about the match, playing against his former teammates and Misfits’ state as a team within the EU LCS.
First of all: Congratulations for your win against Unicorns of Love. How do you feel right now?
I feel really good right now, it’s always fun to meet your old teammates and friends. Beating them feels pretty good as well, not gonna lie. (laughs)
Not only did you get to play against your former teammates, but you also got to play against Exileh, another fantastic German Midlaner. How did you experience the matchup?
It was a pretty hyped matchup, so it was exciting to see which one of us would outperfom the other.. Without trying to brag, I think I was able to show who’s the better Midlaner out of the two of us, at least for now. I’m pretty happy with my performance.
You managed to surprise quite a lot of fans and viewers with your performance on Ahri. How did that pick come to be?
Ahri is a super strong champion against immobile champions, both times we picked her, UoL picked Orianna and Ashe, so it was the perfect counter. Ahri almost always beats Orianna, which we were able to see from the third match in particular. We got early kills on Orianna with the Ahri + Lee Sin combination and just snowballed from there.
In the second game however, UoL managed to take the lead and had good vision on the top side and within our jungle, so I was both unable to farm and unable to play the 1-3-1 formation that we wanted to play. So the second game didn’t really show how strong Ahri actually is right now, but in the third game we did get the early kills, did get the early towers and played our game until the late game. At that point though, it was pretty much almost impossible to beat Unicorns’ team composition, so we probably should’ve finished the game a lot earlier than we did.
“Almost impossible”, huge emphasis on that “almost” part given that you guys did manage to grab the win. What did it come down to?
Essentially it came down to this stupidly long second Baron fight. The first Baron we took almost cost us the game, it was so pointless as well. We were really far ahead, there was nothing to be gained from doing Baron, but we did so anyway. It was just bad, straight up bad from our side. Then, when two of our inhibitors were down, we had to take the second Baron as well, even though it was a 50:50 Baron too. It was risky, but if we wouldn’t have taken that risk, we would’ve lost. Getting that Baron was a bit lucky admittedly, but it turned the tides in our favour.
There were some mistakes on UoL’s side of things too: When they came in to compete for Baron, they came in one by one, rather than grouping up like they were supposed to. Our pick composition with Jhin, Lee Sin and Ahri then managed to pick off Zyra and Trundle and just comfortably end the game from there. In all fairness though, these decisions are made within the time frame of a few seconds, so I can’t really blame them for making these mistakes. Sometimes it just happens.
You’re now in a comfortable second place, before playing H2K at least. How happy are you with your teams performance thus far?
I’m really happy in all honesty. I expected UoL to be slightly favoured against us, so beating them was a fantastic experience for us and shows us that we’re on the right track. If we manage to beat H2K as well, only G2 would be ahead of us, so we can be really happy with our performance. Overall, I’d view us as one of the best three teams in the region right now. We now need to keep our focus and manage to translate this success to playoffs, because let’s be serious: Playoffs is all that matters. When you get into playoffs, you need to be ready to beat everyone and anyone.
How does Misfits’ performance compare to your expectations before the season started? Was it clear for you guys that you were going to be contenders for first place, or did you expect to get into Top 6 and that’s that?
All the other players had really high expectations to be honest, every single one of them expected Top 2 or Top 3 at the least. Personally, I was looking at reaching playoffs. This was partly due to my difficult season with Origen. Now that we’re performing so well, I think we’re at least the second best team in our group guaranteed and I’m really excited for the next weeks and playoffs.
Are you happy with your own performance so far? Especially when compared to your performance during the aforementioned split at Origen.
Definitely. Misfits gives me everything I need to show that I’m a good player, which feels really nice. I have really good synergy with KaKAO and the overall team chemistry is fantastic. Everyone’s friends with one another, which is super important for criticism in particular: It’s a lot easier to give a friend criticism rather than someone you dislike. This is because the person you might have issues with either might not care for your opinion in the first place, or thinks that your criticism is based on the two of you having issues with one another.
I think I was able to positively surprise a lot of people with my performance, especially given the last split. Showing that my performance at Origen doesn’t reflect me as a player is something I’m very proud of. I’m really thankful for Misfits giving me this opportunity to redeem myself.
Thank you very much for your time!
