After a strong performance against H2K, the Unicorns of Love are back in control of Group B. We talked to their ADC Samux about how they turned around the second game, the current ADC meta and how he integrated into the team successfully.
Congratulations for the win! How do you feel right now?
I feel really good. The second game was really hard, but we came back and played a really strong mid- to late-game, so I’m happy about that.
You were behind by 7.5k gold, do you think that comebacks are a core strength of the Unicorns?
I think we play a really good Macro game in general. So we can always make a comeback if necessary.
What was the turning point for the Unicorns in the second game?
We were able to push through Mid, so we inevitably took control of the Baron area at some point. Once we got the pick on Orianna, that’s when we knew we were in complete control of both Midlane and Nashor, we had everything warded and were able to get picks over and over again.
How did you experience the matchup against Nuclear and Chei?
I think they are pretty good, they definitely are in the Top 3 in terms of EU Botlanes.
Other than them, who would you put in the Top 3?
The G2 Botlane. Our Botlane would be tied for 3rd, together with the one from Misfits.
Do you like playing with Hylissang?
I think he’s really good. He does a lot of shotcalling, so it’s very comfortable to play with him as a Botlane partner.
When you first came into the team, did it help to have a veteran right by your side?
Yes, he taught me quite a lot. I improved a lot thanks to him.
Quite a few people were worried that you might not be able to perform on the level needed for the Unicorns, how did you manage to improve so much within such a small timeframe?
I don’t think I was good at the start, but both Hylissang and Vizicsacsi taught me a lot and helped me integrate into the team environment. Everyone is really friendly with one another and everyone tries to improve constantly, me included. I think I’m slowly but steadily becoming a good asset for the team.
Today you picked up Ezreal, which was really decisive in the second game. You had a fantastic score, managed to do tons of damage. Do you think Ezreal is a good pick right now?
I think he’s really strong. He has a very strong laning phase against Jhin and I knew they were going to pick Jhin since they wanted the Jhin-Rumble-Combo. Picking Ezreal instead of Caitlyn definitely was the correct decision.
After Patch 7.5 has rolled out, who do you think is the best ADC in the current Meta?
I think it’s Ezreal. Either him or Caitlyn.
Both Varus and Jhin got hit in the recent patches, do you think we’re going to see a greater variety in terms of ADCs now?
Yes, definitely. I think Varus is still playable, you just need to go with a Crit-Build. People are going to start to play him in combination with Lulu as well, which I consider being very good.
You managed to grab first place in your group, do you think you’ll be able to secure this position until playoffs?
Well, we only have to play Origen, Splyce, and Vitality now, so I think we have a really high chance of keeping our spot in the group.
You only lost two matches so far, one against Misfits and G2 each, what did you learn from these losses?
After IEM we felt a bit lost. It felt like we forgot how to play properly and that we always tried to push for a certain, unique style rather than just going by the Meta and perfecting it. The game against Misfits was like a wake-up call and we massively improved since then. Now we know how to play properly again and found our style once more.
What are your hopes for playoffs?
I hope we win (laughs). That’s all I’m hoping for.
That’s the goal?
That’s our goal.
Anything you’d like to say to the Unicorns fans?
Thank you very much for the support, it motivates us a lot and it’s really nice to see every time we play.
Thank you very much for your time!
